UCI QuarkNet Center Annual Report - 2022
The QuarkNet center at the University of California, Irvine resumed activities in 2022 after a long hiatus. Our first big activity was a two-day workshop for high school teachers from the Los Angeles and Orange counties:
Our workshop occurred on July 7-8. We hosted ten teachers in person and one remotely who was in China at the time. We also had a teacher from Japan joining us together with QuarkNet staff members Ken Cecire and Shane Wood. We had a tremendous amount of fun with many activities that included using small cloud chambers to visualize cosmic rays and touring the research facilities in our campus. We focused many of our activities on neutrinos, those elusive and mysterious particles that permeate the universe and that may help scientists unravel some of the big questions in physics.
Our center is looking forward to expanding its activities. We have begun hosting a high school student doing research with us, and we are planning to host an International Masterclass this coming year.
